Looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant in Montreal?
Your taste buds are in the mood for a fiesta? Nothing better than tacos to wake them up. Here’s a selection of restaurants that offer the best versions of the Mexican specialty. Oh que sí!
La Catrina
This is the place to go for contemporary Mexican cuisine in the Old Port. Owner Emiliano Gonzalez, also behind the Maison Saint-Paul sabrage bar, shared all of his Mexican mother’s culinary secrets with Chef Jacques Coutu, infusing authenticity into the generously filled and colorful tacos. A dozen varieties are offered (2 for $10). We have a weakness for the classic Cochinita Pibil (shredded pork) tacos from Yucatan (but also for the esquites, a warm grilled corn salad typical of Mexico City). On the spot or to take away.

The Matraca
Make a stop in Mexico City right on Saint-Denis at the Taqueria La Matraca. The super-simple, ultra-vitamin-packed restaurant – almost cafeteria style – serves authentic tacos on which you can pour a ton of spicy sauce. We love it!

T & T tacos and tortas
Here, no need to break your head. On the menu are tacos and tortas (sandwiches). Period. The freshness is certainly there. We love the tacos de carnitas (shredded pork) and the cochinita sandwich. It has become a classic on the Plateau.
51 Rachel Street West
Calaveras
We serve tacos in this small restaurant with a vitamin-packed décor that respects tradition. It’s full of flavors, real and spicy!

Escondite
Looking for a new kind of taco with modern flavours? Head for the always lively Escondite. The food is good, the décor vibrant and the service very warm. After the branches at Phillips Square on Drummond Street in Laval, a fourth one opened at the beginning of June in Old Montreal.
Café Cantina
A Californian-inspired Mexican cuisine that evolves according to the chef’s inspirations. No matter the recipe of the moment, the tacos are always generously filled and overflowing with freshness. Great option for lunch in Pointe-Saint-Charles!
1880 Centre Street, Montreal
Capitale Taco
Impossible to miss THE Mexican from Chinatown and his specialty is taco. Count between 10$ and 13$ for three. Our favorite: the comforting Rosarito made with breaded shrimp, red cabbage, pico de gallo, chipotle mayonnaise and avocado sauce.
